The tallest player ever to step in the NBA with his 2.31m died yesterday at 47. Manute Bol had been in hospital since the beginning of May due to kidney problems and a rare and very serious skin disease.
After finishing his basketball career, the former Sudan born centre became known for his involvement in humanitarian causes, especially in his home country and his close friend Tom Prichard describes his death as the loss of "a hero and an example for all of us."
Bol was selected by the Washington Bullets in the 1985 draft and had an immediate impact in his rookie season, averaging 4.9 blocks per game which is still a record today. In the 1988-1989 season he again led the league in blocked shots. During his 10-year career he wore the jerseys of the Bullets, Golden State Warrios, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat and averaged 2.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game. After the NBA he also played in Uganda and Qatar.

Last weekend GBC made history in the Spanish ACB but not for the best reasons. The Basque team lost to Valladolid, avoided relegation, but scored just 39 points, a record low for any team since the league was created. The tough defense by Valladolid (which scored 61) allowed an amount of points which are more commonly seen by halftime (GBC had 20 by then). The sum of both teams scores matched the lowest ever in the league, 100. Curiously enough, the previous mark belonged to Valladolid, which lost to Unicaja Málaga 67-40 nine years ago.
GBC had percentages of 34% for field goals, 14% for three-pointers and 13% for free throws, which means that for every four shots, they missed three. Alberto Miralles (10 rebounds) and Domen Lorbek led the team with 10 points apiece.

Wednesday night the NBA witnessed the crowning of one of its best coaches. Golden State Warriors' Don Nelson became the coach with most wins ever in the league after his team downed the Minnesota Timberwolves 116-107. The 69-year-old has now 1.333 wins, one more than Lenny Wilkens and with less one season (31) in his career. Pat Riley is third in the list with 1.210 victories and Utah Jazz's Jerry Sloan fourth with 1.187.
Known for his tactical experiments and offensive-minded game, Nelson started his career in 1976 and was at the helm of only four teams (Milwaukee Bucks, Warriors, New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks). He was named coach of the year on three occasions, led the USA national team in 1994, is yet to grab a championship ring and is also the only coach with at least 1.000 wins not to make part yet of the NBA Hall of Fame.
Anthony Tolliver was the best player for the Warriors in the game with 34 points and eight rebounds, while Kevin Love had 17 and 18 in defeat.

The Perth Wildcats succeeded the South Dragons downing Wollongong Hawks 96 to 72 yesterday in the third and deciding game of the Grand Final series. The hero of the match was American guard Kevin Lisch who, in his first year as professional, was named MVP of the finals, netting 29 points (including five three-pointers), out of which 13 were made late in the third period, when the Wildcats made a 14-0 run. The 34-year-old scored an all-time record of 63 points, pulverizing the previous mark set by legendary Óscar Schmidt in 1999 with 59. Early this year "Marcelinho" had already scored 45 points. The forward, who had 38 points by halftime, helped his team beat São José 101 to 80, adding four rebounds, one assist and a steal. Such amount of points also carried another milestone: "Marcelinho" netted 16 three-pointers out of 21 attempts, something that also no other player had done before. These numbers might as well constitute a record beyond the Brazilian borders, as in two of the best world leagues the marks are 12 (Kobe Bryant and Donyell Marshall, NBA) and 11 (Schmidt, Spanish ACB) threes.
The Brazilian international, who admitted to have been inspired by watching Bryant's 81-point game recently, leads NBB with 26.8 points per game, as Flamengo is second in the table with 13 wins and four losses.

Yesterday marked an historical day in the Chinese league (CBA). In the game that opposed Shandong to Jiangsu, American Andre Emmett scored more than any other player ever in the league: 71 points. The 27-year-old guard broke the previous record set by Jilin's Sun Jun in the 2000/2001 season by one more point and helped Shandong win the game 129 to 113. Emmett shot 28 of 34 field goals, 3 of 11 from beyond the arc and 6 of 6 from the free throw line, adding 10 rebounds, four steals, three assists and a block to his performance. He was 38 minutes on the floor.
Emmett is spending his first year in China and currently leads the CBA with 32.4 points per game. After leaving college basketball (Texas Tech University) he had a short stint in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies and later played in Lithuania (Lietuvos Rytas), Belgium (Liège), France (Pau-Orthez) and Venezuela (Marinos Anzoátegui).

The previous holder was former teammate back in Joventut days, Rudy Fernández, who scored the same amount of points being 20 years, 10 months and 22 days old, while Rubio is just 19 and three months. He has now 1.001 points and will beat another record soon, as he only needs three assists more to pass Pablo Laso (22 years old at the time) as the youngest ever to reach 500 dishes to a basket.
Back in 2005 Rubio made his debut in Spain's top league at 14 years old, something which had also never happened before.

It happened at 10.000, 20.000 and it happened again at 25.000. Last night Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant became the youngest player ever in the NBA to score that amount of points. Scoring steadily and hitting milestones throughout his career, the 31-year-old set the new record by converting a free throw by the end of the first half of the game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Bryant finished the game with a team-high 31 points in the 87-93 loss.
The previous record holder, legendary Wilt Chamberlain (the fourth all-time best scorer in the league), was 35 days older when he hit the mark.
In a 14-year career, Bryant has been averaging 25.3 points per game, to go along with 5.3 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.5 steals. He is also the youngest ever to make the All-Star Game back in 1998.

Last Sunday brought one of the most memorable games in the history of Italian Lega A. If it was in a negative or positive sense, it depends on the side. NSB Napoli managed to score just 37 points and allowed 138 from Roma, a 101-point difference which became the biggest one ever since 1973, when Milano beat Varese 117 to 44. In the previous round they were also beaten hard by Biella (54-124).
The score is easy to explain: Napoli played mostly with U19 players, as most of its stars and senior players left given the financial crisis it is going through. The team (not to be confused with the historical Napoli from previous seaons) moved from Rieti to Napoli this season in an attempt to gather more support and sponsors, but failed to do so. President Gaetano Papalia will meet with the Italian Federation representatives this week to discuss the situation.

News: Nets make worst season start ever (Notícia: Nets com pior início de temporada de sempre)

The NBA season started one month and a few days ago and the New Jersey Nets are still winless. The Dallas Mavericks handed them their 18th straight loss last night and so the Nets became the worst team ever in the league in a season start. The previous mark belonged to the Miami Heat (1988-1989) and the Los Angeles Clippers (1999), which had lost 17 consecutive games when starting their respective seasons.
In the 117-101 loss to the Mavericks, the Nets did a good first period which ended tied at 28. They also tied the third with the same score and even won the last one by 11 points, but the second dictated the outcome of the game, as they were beaten 49-22.
The team will try to end the negative streak on Friday night as they face the Charlotte Bobcats under the orders of newly appointed coach Kiki Vandeweghe, after Lawrence Frank was dismissed due to the poor results. Various injuries have also been plaguing the main players of the team since the beginning of the season.

It had to happen one day and it was on Sunday that Alexandros Aggelakos took the place that once belonged to Sofoklis Schortsanitis. The Kolossos guard made his debut in the Greek league at 15 years and 2 months of age, breaking the previous record by five months. Schortsanitis had made his first game in 2001 while playing for Iraklis. The game against AEK ended with a win for the Rhodes team by 77-61.
By the end of the game, young Aggelakos thanked the team for the opportunity, confessing his nervousness while on court for 54 seconds. He finished the game scoreless without any statistical record.

The first round of the Eurocup reserved a record for UNICS Kazan and a memorable performance by Marko Popović. The Russian team converted 20 three-pointers in 43 attempts (46.5%) as they thumbed Beşiktaş from Turkey by 101-76. UNICS added two more shots to the previous record which was in the possession of Valencia, Cantù and Azovmash Mariupol.
Croatian Popović was the most inspired from behind the arc and netted 9 shots in 14 attempts, tieing Ruben Douglas' mark, although the latter attempted 12 times. The 27-year-old guard Popović finished the game with 36 points and 5 assists, a performance which was surely the best so far in his career.

News: Šeškus youngest ever in LKL (Notícia: Šeškus, o mais jovem de sempre na LKL)

Nearly three minutes last Saturday meant history in the Lithuanian league and the protagonist was Edvinas Šeškus. At just 14, the 1.90m guard became the youngest player ever to take part in an LKL game as Rūdupis faced Perlas. The coach of the former, who is Edvinas father, decided to let his son in when the game was already decided in favour of his team. Šeškus didn't have a chance to score or even shoot and commited two turnovers. But that was not so important in a historial moment.
While Edvinas' favourite team are the Los Angeles Lakers and the player Kobe Bryant, he doesn't even think about the NBA right now and is rather interested in improving his game at the Arvydas Sabonis basketball school.
The previous record had been established by Martynas Mažeika and Ignas Sinkevičius when both were 15 years old in 2000.
Rūdupis is ninth in the league with 2 wins and 5 losses.

(No passado sábado, três minutos fizeram história na liga lituana, e o protagonista foi Edvinas Šeškus. Com apenas 14 anos, o base de 1,90 m tornou-se o jogador mais jovem de sempre a disputar um jogo na LKL. A sua equipa, o Rūdupis, bateu o Perlas por 89-65, e o treinador, pai de Edvinas, decidiu colocar o filho no jogo quando este já estava decidido a seu favor. Edvinas não consegui marcar qualquer ponto, nem sequer lançar, tendo cometido dois "turnovers", mas isso passou despercebido no momento histórico.
Embora a equipa e jogador favoritos de Edvinas sejam os Los Angeles Lakers e Kobe Bryant, de momento nem pensa na NBA, estando mais interessado em consolidar o seu jogo na escola de basquetebol Arvydas Sabonis.

Joventut converted one more three pointer than the previous top mark they held (together with Barcelona and Fuenlabrada) and have now established a new Spanish league record with 19 three-point shots made in a game. The deed happened yesterday in the ninth round of ACB during the game against Murcia which Joventut won 83 to 73 in overtime. The total of three-point shots made by "La Penya" was of 44, less two than the record set by Barcelona last season.
Latvian Kristaps Valters, who had also collaborated in the previous record while playing for Fuenlabrada, was the most inspired from behind the arc making 6 of 9 attempts. Behind him Serbian Uroš Tripković converted less one in equal number of attempts. The other contributors were Luka Bogdanović (3/7), Clay Tucker (3/9), David Jelinek (1/3) and Pere Tomàs (1/3).

Brandon Jennings is making sure he stays in the history of basketball. And he's only 20. After unprecedentedly skipping the NCAA and the NBA by joining Virtus Roma last season directly from high school, the Milwaukee Bucks rookie guard became the youngest player ever in the American league to score as much as 55 points. The deed was established last night when the Bucks faced and beat the Golden State Warriors 129 to 125. The previous record belonged to Cleveland Cavaliers' LeBron James who had scored 56 points in 2005, but back then he was approximately one month older than Jennings is now. Jennings' record is even more impressive as he was scoreless in the first period and added 5 rebounds and 5 assists to his performance.
The scoring explosion also passed the team record for most points by a rookie set by legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1970 with 51. The all-time scoring record for the Bucks was established by Michael Redd when he scored 57 three years ago. Jennings needed three more points to match the all-time rookie record set two times in 1960 by Wilt Chamberlain.
Jennings is now averaging 25.6 points, 5.1 assists and 4.4 rebounds in seven games.
