News: Brasília becomes South American champion

In al all-Brazilian final played on Sunday, Uniceub/BRB Brasília claimed the South American League title.
Brasília beat rivals Flamengo 96-86 and already led by nine points at halftime especially due to a good shot selection and Flamengo’s misses from long range. During the second half the champions allowed a 17-3 run by Flamengo and trailed, but outside shots made them regain the lead and grab the win.
Welington dos Santos “Nezinho” (6 rebounds) and Guilherme Giovannoni (5 rebounds) had 22 points apiece, while Alex Garcia added 16 and Márcio Cipriano less one and 6 boards. For the runner-up Marcelinho Machado nailed 28 points, followed by Guilherme Teichmann with 12 and Rafael Araújo “Baby” (10 rebounds) and Jefferson William (7 boards) with 11 each.
Boca Juniors from Argentina secured the third place by beating former champions Quimsa 79-66 and qualified for the Americas League.

News: Giovannoni leaves Italy, goes back to Brazil (Notícia: Giovannoni deixa Itália e regressa ao Brasil)

The Italian journey of Guilherme Giovannoni with started in 2004 will end this year as the Brazilian international will return to his country. Universo Brasília signed the forward for next season as confirmed by himself yesterday during the Americas Championship. The 29-year-old described this step as a new challenge, hoping to contribute for the success of NBB in just its second edition.
Giovannoni started his career in Pinheiros and crossed the Atlantic to play in Spain (Fuenlabrada, Gijón), Ukraine (Kyiv) and Italy (Biella, Benetton Treviso, Virtus Bologna). Last season with the jersey of the Bologna team he averaged 8.7 points and 5.2 rebounds in the EuroChallenge.
Universo Brasília is the reigning league runner-up and won the Americas League.

O Universo Brasília contratou o extremo para a próxima época como confirmou, ontem, o próprio no decorrer do Campeonato das Américas. News: Universo becomes Americas League champion (Notícia: Universo campeão da Liga das Américas)

In the third round of the Americas League Final Four Universo Brasília became the 2009 champions by beating Mexican side Halcones Xalapa 86-83. Valter Silva "Valtinho" led the Brazilians with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists while fellow teammate Alex Garcia had 19 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists and was named MVP of the tournament. Abdul Mills was Halcones best player with 21 points, adding 5 assists. Biguá from Uruguay earned the third place by beating also Brazilians from Minas 77-84.
Currently Brazilian league runner-ups, Universo takes the place of Peñarol from Argentina that took the trophy in the first edition of the league. Next season the competition will qualify two teams for the new FIBA World Club Championship to take place in 2010.

(Na terceira jornada da "final a quatro" da Liga das Américas, o Universo Brasília tornou-se o campeão de 2009 ao vencer os mexicanos do Halcones Xalapa por 86-83.
