The Los Angeles Lakers lost one game of the NBA playoff finals, but won another four. In the fifth and last game of the season, Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and the rest beat the Orlando Magic 99 to 86, claiming the club's 15th championship. The first one for the Spaniard and the fourth for the American, both being the title architects. Phil Jackson became the NBA coach with most titles (10), passing legendary Red Auerbach.

No quinto e último jogo da época, Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol e companhia bateram os Orlando Magic por 99-86, obtendo o 15º título para o clube. O primeiro para o espanhol e o quarto para o norte-americano, tendo ambos sido os arquitectos do título. Phil Jackson tornou-se o treinador com mais campeonatos conquistados (10), ultrapassando o lendário Red Auerbach.

Pau Gasol won the FIBA award for the 2008 European player of the year. The Spanish power forward/centre had an intense year, leading the national team to the silver medal in the Beijing Olympics and proving pivotal for Los Angeles Lakers NBA playoff finals appearence.
Spain teammate Rudy Fernández finished second in the selection, while German superstar Dirk Nowitzki grabbed the third place.

O extremo-poste/poste espanhol teve um ano intenso, liderando a selecção na conquista da medalha de prata nos Jogos Olímpicos de Pequim e tornando-se fundamental na presença dos Los Angeles Lakers nas finais dos "playoffs" da NBA.
O companheiro da selecção Rudy Fernández foi segundo na votação e a superestrela alemã Dirk Nowitzki alcançou o terceiro lugar.

Traditionally in the beginning of every year, the prestigious sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport awards the best basketball player of the year. The 2008 pick was Spain's Pau Gasol, who reached the NBA playoff finals with the Los Angeles Lakers and won the silver medal with Spain in the Beijing Olympics. Another Spanish, Rudy Fernández (NBA's Portland Trail Blazers), came second in the voting and Turkish Hedo Türkoğlu (NBA's Orland Magic) was third.
Gasol succeeds Tony Parker who won the distinction in 2007 and becomes the first Spanish to the picked by the Italian newspaper since the nominations started (1979).
