Manu Ginóbili has been awarded with one of the highest awards in Argentina, the Konex Bright Award, as the best sportsman of the decade.
The distinction recognises the San Antonio Spurs guard's achievements between 2000 and 2009, namely the gold medal at the 2004 Olympics, silver at the 2002 World Championship and bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics with the Argentina national team. At club level, the 33-year-old won three NBA championships (2003, 2005 and 2007), conquered the triple crown in 2001 while playing for Virtus Bologna (Italian league title, Italian Cup and the Euroleague), as well as another Italian Cup the following year.
Konex Awards started being handed in 1980 by the Konex Foundation to personalities and institutions of various cultural fields and this year the jury was headed by former tennis player Gabriela Sabatini. Former winners in the sports field include Juan Manuel Fangio and Diego Armando Maradona, as well as Sabatini.
