The Butler Bulldogs, in fact the underdog, almost fulfilled a dream season, but the Duke Blue Devils were there to spoil it. Duke conquered the fourth NCAA title in their history on Monday and succeeded North Carolina with a 59-61 win over Butler. The runner-up almost managed to prolongue the dream with a last second halfcourt shot by Gordon Hayward, but it bounced out.
Led by USA national team coach Mike Krzyzewski, who also won his fourth title, Duke's "Big Three" carried Duke to their first crown since 2001. Kyle Singler topscored the champion with 19 points, adding nine rebounds, while Jon Scheyer had 15 points, six rebounds and five assists and Nolan Smith added 13 points. For Butler, Hayward (eight rebounds) and Shelvin Mack (five boards) netted 12 points apiece and Matt Howard added less one.
The game score was the closest one since the 1989 final, when Michigan defeated Seton Hall by one point.
