Guard Kirk Penney was named the 2008-2009 Australian NBL MVP, thus becoming the first New Zealander to get the Andrew Gaze award, in a choice made by coaching staffs. The New Zealand Breakers' player got two more votes than Sydney Spirits' Matthew Knight and three more than Nigerian Ebi Ere (Melbourne Tigers).
Penney had an outstanding season, leading the league with 24.2 points per game and adding 4.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 28 regular season games. He was also third in 3-point shooting percentage, behind James Harvey and legendary Shane Heal. The 28-year-old Tall Blacks international also made history by leading his team to a first time playoff appearence, losing in the semi-finals by 2-0 against the Tigers.
Penney succeeds veteran Chris Anstey, who won the distinction last season and also the championship title. The complete list of MVPs is below.
