Facts: Angola celebrates 79 years of basketball - 1/3 (Factos: Angola comemora 79 anos de basquetebol - 1/3)

Basketball was born in Angola in 1930, more precisely on 18th May. The first game was alledgedly organised that day by Pina Cabral, an officer and physical training teacher of the Portuguese army, that put Sporting Clube Luanda and Associação Académica do Liceu Central Salvador Correia to play, the former winning by 8-5. Each basket equalled one point and the game was intended to mark the 10th anniversary of Sporting. However, the next basketball game to be played in Angola would only take place six months later, as there was only one more club at the time, Clube Atlético Luanda. Two years later, one more club started practising the game, Sport Luanda e Benfica.
It was only in 1950 that regular championships (at local and national level) were organised and basketball became more poupular throughout the country. In 1963 the national league was included in the wider Portuguese championship (as Angola remained a colony of Portugal until 1975) with Benfica Luanda being crowned metropolitan champion in 1969.
