Coach Carlo Recalcati will no longer command the Italian national team. The announcement is yet to become official, but the 64-year-old and the Italian federation have already reached an agreement for the separation.
Although Recalcati had signed a contract extension in June, the failure to qualify the national side for Eurobasket this year, something which happened for the first time in the country's basketball history, sparked another wave of criticism over Recalcati's work. This time not even the good friendship with the Italian federation's president Dino Meneghin, could secure Recalcati the job, which will remain as one of the longest in Europe (2001-2009). Recalcati conquered a bronze medal in Eurobasket 2003 and a silver one at the Olympic Games the following year.
The top rumoured names to replace the Italian are those of countrymen Simone Pianigiani (currently with Siena) and Pino Sacripanti, Jasmin Repeša (who recently left the Croatian bench) and Turkish Oktay Mahmuti (jobless at this time).
