The Russian federation will have to start looking for another head coach, as David Blatt is to step down. The decision was announced after the difficult win yesterday over Ivory Coast (72-66) at the World Championship in Turkey. The 51-year-old American-Israeli described the decison as personal and did not provide further explanations. The Russians have for now two wins and one loss and are second in Group B of the tournament.
Hired in 2006, Blatt led Russian to a gold metal at Eurobasket 2007, finished ninth at the Beijing Olympics and seventh at Eurobasket last year. He was recently appointed coach of Israeli giants Maccabi Tel Aviv and previously coached defunct Dynamo Saint Petersburg, Benetton Treviso, Efes Pilsen and Dynamo Moscow.
