News: 1º de Agosto keeps African Champions Cup

Once again, Angola showed its dominance in African basketball. For the fourth consecutive year, 1º de Agosto had no competition and ended up claiming the African Champions Cup title in Benin. In the final played today, the Angolan champions thumped Condor 41 to 73.
Despite winning the last period (19-18), the Cameroonians were able to score just 2 points in the second period and 9 in the third, which only goes to show how dismal the game was.
Star Joaquim “Kikas” Gomes led the winners with a solid 27 points and 20 rebounds, while veteran Miguel Lutonda contributed with 16 points and Felizardo Ambrósio added another double-double (11 points and 17 boards).
This was 1º de Agosto’s seventh title in the competition and the eighth by a team from Angola (Petro Luanda claimed the trophy in 2006), which makes the country the all-time leading winner in the Cup.
In the bronze medal match, Moroccan side AS Salé beat Mazembe from DR Congo 74-71.
