News: Diamantidis retires from international play

One of the leaders of the Greek national team decided to put an end to his international career. Guard Dimitris Diamantidis announced the decision shortly after the 80-72 loss to Spain at the World Championship's eighth-finals round, thus failing to make the quarters. The 30-year-old called it the end of a cycle and confessed to have experienced "incredible moments" while playing for the national side. In supposedly his last international game, Diamantidis scored 16 points, blocked two shots, made two steals, dished two assists and grabbed four rebounds.
With this outcome Greece loses it's most influential player on defense and one of it's most prolific guards in game organisation and three-point shooting.
In the national team for nearly a decade, Diamantidis helped achieve gold at Eurobasket in 2005 (he led the tournament in assists and made the all-tournament team) and a silver medal at the World Championship the following year.
